What's the difference between a tea ceremony and a tea tasting?

A tea ceremony is a slow gongfu cha (功夫茶, "tea with skill") session built around three or four fine teas, brewed infusion after infusion in a small vessel. A tea tasting is a guided flight: five or more contrasting teas poured side by side. Ceremony means depth. Tasting means range.

Location differs too. Our tea ceremony happens at the tea house on Cherng Talay Road, from 2,000 THB - or, by arrangement, at your venue: a home, a spa, a hotel, an event. For a private tasting we come to you - a villa in Bang Tao, a hotel near Surin, anywhere in Phuket from 3,500 THB.

For two hours the world narrows to one tea table. Our tea master warms the gaiwan, wakes the leaf with a quick rinse of 95 °C water, then pours the first of many short infusions - some barely ten seconds long. The whole session is built around three or four carefully chosen teas.

With an aged cake like our 2019 Wuliang Mountain sheng pu-erh, the taste shifts steeping by steeping: wild herbs first, then wood and floral honey. Between pours, quiet conversation - why the cups are so small, how a pressed cake ages. Guests book it as a pause between beaches, and two unhurried hours vanish.

How a guided tea tasting works: teas, timing, what you'll try

A tasting is 120 minutes and five or more teas, brewed gongfu style in front of you and compared cup against cup.

A typical flight moves from light to dark: a green tea, a creamy milk oolong, a Yunnan dianhong, a GABA oolong from Mae Salong, a ripe pu-erh to close. The liquor deepens from pale gold to ruby; by the third tea you usually know where your taste leans. Everything poured comes off our own shelf, sourced directly in Yunnan, Fujian and Northern Thailand, and if one tea wins you over, take a pouch home.

Which one should you book?

Book the ceremony when you want calm and depth: one remarkable tea, understood from the inside. Book the tasting for discovery - you are new to Chinese tea, or choosing teas to take home, and five styles on one table settle the question fastest.
