Does Thailand actually grow its own tea?

Yes - and good tea. Around Mae Salong, a few hours from Chiang Rai, gardens planted decades ago with cultivars brought from Taiwan produce leaf that stands next to Taiwan's own. The most distinctive is GABA oolong, fermented without oxygen.

The north also grows assam-leaf black tea, which Thais chewed as miang before anyone brewed it. But the oolongs earn the suitcase space.
